Purdue basketball originated in the land of their proud Purdue University. Purdue University is a public research university and also a flagship campus of the Purdue university system, established in 1869. Donor businessmen John Purdue donated his grants to establish this college centering West Lafayette, Indiana. U.S. News & World Report (2018) has ranked Purdue University as the 113th best university in global rankings. Basketball is one of the major games in there. Mackey Arena (formerly Purdue Arena-1967–present) is the home court of boilermakers.

Purdue basketball started their remarkable career in 1896, with their first game against Lafayette YMCA. They have made undefeated record of 8-0 in the1902-03 season under the coaching of C.I Freeman. Due to this victorious season, basketball became as a more popular sport in the university. Because of this popularity, Purdue University Athletic Association made basketball as a part of them.
Purdue basketball begun their big ten conference journey in 1906.The golden era of the Purdue basketball started in 1917, with the appointment of Ward Lambert as the head coach. He led the boilermakers for 28 seasons till 1946.Lambert coached 16 all Americans and 31 First team all-big ten selections. Purdue basketball team of 1931-32 is considered as the best team ever in their history. They successfully finished the 1932-31 NCAA men’s basketball season with an incomparable record of 17-1(Big ten 11-1).Their winning percentage was 0.944.Purdue captain John Wooden was selected as the National Player of the Year. Also he is the very first college level player to be named a consensus All-American three times. Moreover, the Helms Athletic Foundation and The Premo-Poretta power poll retroactively selected the boilermakers as 1932 National champions.

In 1947 center Paul Hoffman named a first Team-All Big Ten selection .He is the only Boilermaker selected in history for that. Moreover in 1948 he became the BAA’s (Basketball Association of America-Original of NBA) first player selected as Rookie of the year. Ernie Hall is the maiden African-American basketball player for boilermakers.
Purdue basketball won their first conference title in 1969. Glenn Robinson has become an All-American and National Player of The Year in 1994.It was the second time a boilermaker was named for that title (After John Wooden in 1932).In this era Purdue basketball enlisted their first foreign player, Matt Ten Dam from Netherlands. Also the head coach Gene Keady has become the most successful coach in Boilermakers’ history with his 372nd win.
An Incomparable journey of Purdue basketball
Coach Matt Painter led the boilermakers to an incomparable season win with a 29-6 record and to the Big Ten Title in 2010 season. After the 2010-2011 season, Jajuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore named for the NBA Draft. Both of them played for the Boston Celtics on June 23, 2011 .Purdue completed their 2012 season with a record of 12-3.They have afforded the 5th best home winning streak in the nation (27 wins) .Moreover they hold the fewest turnover average per game. Alabama broke their home winning streak in 2012.They successfully completed with a record of 10-8 .That was the 6th consecutive 22+ win season of the Purdue basketball .Also this was a record of the program’s history. In 2015, the boilermakers lost to Cincinnati in overtime. It was the end of the streak of 14 wins since 1993. They ranked as the 9th of the nation in 2016 season with the recorded consecutive double digit victories. The winning record was 11-0.
In 2017, 2017-18 Purdue basketball team represent the U.S at the World University Games in Taipei .They won the silver medal after the lost to Lithuania.
Boilermakers won the 2017 Big Ten Conference title for the 23rd time. Caleb Swanigan was the unanimous Big Player of the year. Also in 2017-18 season Purdue obtained the national-leading 19-game winning streak. Boilermakers became the 2nd in the east region of the 2018 NCCA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament and the 3rd in the south region of the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.
In 2019, they advanced to their 3rd straight sweet 16 under the coaching of Matt Painter. Moreover Purdue ran into their 1st Elite Eight Tournament in last 20 years after a remarkable victory against Tennessee Volunteers by 99-94 in overtime.
Women of Purdue basketball
Purdue Women’s basketball became an intercollegiate sport in 1975.in 1989 they qualified for its 1st NCAA women’s tournament game, under the coaching of Lin Dunn. Purdue Women’s won their maiden national championship over Duke University, in the title match.Machelle joseph (1992) and Stephanie White(1999) named as the National Player of the Year .Stephanie White also selected for Wade Trophy in 1999.Purdue women’s had won NCAA Tournament championship once(1999),Conference Tournament championship nine times and Conference regular season championship seven times.
